April 5, 2010 – Puppy Training Cont’d

Steamboat has seen a ton of snow in the last few days and hearty winds to accompany it. Life is relaxed at the kennel. Easter Sunday and I got to spend some quality time with each of the dogs.

The puppies are growing up so quickly it’s hard to believe. They are so excited to run even though they’ve only done it a few times. Tom Thurston (who has raced twice in the Iditarod) brought over some of his puppies to train on our trail. We moved some of our older dogs over to his kennel to make room for them.

  4. Damn, awesome website. I actually came across this on Ask Jeeves, and I am happy I did. I will definately be coming back here more often. Wish I could add to the conversation and bring a bit more to the table, but am just taking in as much info as I can at the moment.

  6. Hi, I have a Jack Russell, Ralphie (female), who’s about 2 1/2 years old. I got her my senior year in college, which was not the brightest idea I’ve had, and did not take the time to train her properly. She knows basic commands like sit/down/roll over, small stuff from Petsmart training. She’s very aggressive towards other canines, especially when I feed them all, and becomes hostile towards me when I try to discipline her. I was wondering if there is anyway I can teach her to become obedient towards myself, or teach her that I’m the “leader of the pack as I’ve heard it being called. My fiance is constantly telling me that there is nothing that I can do to fix this and I’m going to have to give her up, which I do not wantn to do. I can’t afford professional help right now but I was just wondering if anyone could help with any little tips or advice to help me control her more?

I do rewards based training with my dog. When your dog does something you don’t like, show her what you want her to do – for example if she gets aggressive towards other dogs when you feed, take her away and have her sit or down and reward her as she watches the other dogs eat. Do this for a while until she understands it’s not a threat to her and she will still get food. Let me know if you want more information. The more discipline you use with her, the more likely she is to act aggressively.
