March 19, 2010 – Really?

Cover

As spring time comes around, we like to say people lose their minds a little. Somehow, jeans become common gear even though there’s snow and slush all around. I think the weather makes people dreamy and they pay more attention to the world around them and a little less to their dog sledding team.

It appears to be a common misconception that if you run the dogs up to the bumper of my snowmobile I will speed up to accommodate your speed. This is not the case, I assure you. With the warm weather, it’s important to keep the dogs at a nice easy pace. Running can be hard for dogs with super thick coats or older dogs, which is why we run that at what would be a fast trot. Then the dogs are happy, as am I.

I’m also sustaining more bruises as the end of the season arrives. We have quick release lines that hold the teams in the kennel until we’re ready to let them out on the trail. So you can imagine the tension on the line and when we pull the release, a metal rod flies back and yesterday got my wrist. Today, a dog ran into my leg and shoved it into a sled for a nice bruise that should become a lovely shade of green in a few days.

We were fortunate to get a bit of snow last night that should help pack in the trail for a couple of more weeks. Although I am looking forward to the time when I get to spend a lot of time snuggling the dogs.

Today felt like January with whipping winds and snow storms, but the guests did well with the cold and had no complaints on that part. Till tomorrow…
